This 5 night / 6-day program to Madagascar features lemur viewing, which are endemic to Madagascar.  

THE PROGRAM

Arrive in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Antananarivo, also known as Tana, is Madagascar’s capital city. It is perched at 1400 meters above sea level crowning a spectacular mountain range. Founded in 1625, Antananarivo boasts a rich historical heritage that is complemented by scenic landscapes covered in a large network of popular hiking routes. The city serves as a great base from which to explore the magnificent surrounding area, which hosts several nature reserves, including the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, with its fantastic limestone karsts. Known for its vibrant nightlife, Antananarivo features local live music at a variety of clubs and bars. Visitors can look forward to exploring the remnants of the French colonial era in the old heart of the city, as well as discovering ancient Malagasy palaces interspersed between the faded grandeur of these colonial relics.

NOVOTEL Convention & Spa is situated just outside of the city center. This upmarket hotel is in an ideal location, only a short walk away from the Alarobia Stadium, whilst the Parc de Tsarasaotra and Lac Massy are within the nearby vicinity. The hotels interior is fully modernized and has a sleek design, each of the rooms come equipped with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi access. The hotel also features an on-site bar and offers its guests an airport shuttle.

Today you are driven to Andisabe Reserve.

Located in eastern Madagascar in the Moramanga District, the small village of Andasibe is surrounded by a belt of protected rainforest and several parks boasting incredible natural scenery and an array of exotic Madagascan wildlife. It serves as an excellent base from which to explore the spectacularly scenic surrounds. Visitors can look forward to discovering the natural wonders of the nearby Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Analamazaotra Reserve and Perinet Special Reserve. Do not miss the opportunity to hear the unique song of the large indri lemur, explore a network of incredible trails that wind passed glistening lakes and magnificent waterfalls and discover the rich biodiversity in the local flora and fauna.

En route visit the Peyrieras Nature Farm. Pereyras zoo is a small park located in Marozevo, Madagascar. The reserve boasts a range of reptiles including geckos, chameleons & frogs in captivity. The park organizes guided tours giving visitors the opportunity to see these reptiles up close and even hold the smaller ones. Visitors can also take advantage of lovely photo opportunities of these beautiful creatures. A quick uphill walk will also show you several species of Lemurs.

 

Once at the lodge, enjoy a night walk along the Perinet Special Reserve.

 

Comprising 810 hectares of pristine rainforest and montane forest, the Perinet or Analamazoatra Special Reserve constitutes the southern section of the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Among the kaleidoscope of wildlife found in the reserve, it is the best place to see the Indri Indri, the largest existing lemur, which stands roughly three feet high and has big, teddy-bear-like ears. Endemic to this part of the world, most visitors to Perinet see Indris. If you do not see them, you will certainly hear their distinctive calls. The indri indri can only be seen in Andasibe forest because it does not survive in captivity (Zoos). Indeed, they about 1 kilo of leaves daily, coming from 32 different trees! Discover the eleven other species of lemur in the park, spot a variety of birds, find hidden rare orchids, and try to catch a glimpse of the incredibly unusual satanic leaf-tailed gecko. The paths are big and flat, even if you must climb from time to time to get closer to the Indri.

 

Located on a hill of 100 meters high which gives a panoramic view of the forest. There are 25 rooms, 10 of which are Twins and one of which is a Family Suite for 5 guests. All rooms provide the comfort of a 3-star hotel, and are equipped with Wi-Fi, cable TV and a terrace that offers a panoramic view, an inside living room and a wood burning stove for the cooler season. The restaurant was designed with large windows to provide a spectacular view, as well as a 40 square meter terrace for a unique lunch.

Today’s sightseeing includes a visit to Perinet Special Reserve. This excursion is combined with a visit to Vakona Private Reserve and its lemur island. The reserve is home to a variety of lemurs and birds, as well as the cat-like fossa and crocodiles.  The private reserve is divided into 2 zoos:
  • Crocodile zoo:full of crocodiles in a fenced park. Birds, reptiles, and fossa (Malagasy fox) are in aviary or cages
  • Lemur Island zoo:The lemurs are in a small island reserve making a natural fence (Lemurs are afraid of water). They are fed by the Vakona and you can go remarkably close to them and even touch them for a photo
  • Night Walks: You can also book a night walk inside the Vakona Forest to spot frogs, insects, and nocturnal lemurs.
  • Other activities: If you stay longer, other activities are available in the rest of the reserve including canoeing and horseback riding through the beautiful lush green forest surrounding the Vakona Lodge.

Enjoy a full day visiting Mantadia National Park. Stretching across 20 000 ha of eastern Madagascar, Mantadia National Park is a place of great beauty and biodiversity. From the hotels, it takes 1-hour drive to a bumpy road to reach the entrance to the biggest park in the area. Mantadia is the primary forest with the highest endemicity rate in the area. But because it is big, it is not easy to spot animals. The park is also hilly, which requires a minimum physical condition to fully enjoy your walk. The region is swathed with thick tropical rain forests made of lush ferns, tangled lianas, hundreds of orchid species, and myriad other jungle flora and teeming with a diverse array of endemic wildlife. Visitors can enjoy spectacular hikes and discover hidden waterfalls & rare orchids.

Today you will be transferred overland to Antananarivo. On arrival, you are met and driven to Novotel Convention and Spa.

Visit Ambohimanga King’s Palace. Ambohimanga is a historic royal palace complex situated atop a magnificent forested hill in the highlands of Madagascar. The settlement dates to the 15th century and the precolonial Merina Kingdom when the compound was referred to as Tsimadilo. Visitors can enjoy exploring the heavily fortified village area, sacred spaces, and the burial ground containing several royal tombs, in 2001 The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shopping last souvenirs at handicrafts market: Antananarivo Digue Market is in the beautiful city of Antananarivo in Madagascar. The market features several stalls that offer various products such as spices, gemstones, small cars made of old cans and hand painted images on canvas. Visitors are sure to enjoy picking up a few souvenirs at a reasonable price.

Today you will be transferred from your hotel to Ivato International Airport, where you board your departing international flight.

These prices are valid for travel between June – Dec 15, 2020. Christmas and New Year surcharges will apply for any travel between Dec 15 – Jan 15, 2021. These holiday surcharges are NOT included in these rates.

RESERVATION AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE

Deposit per person required at time of booking: A deposit of 30% of the program price is required at the time of booking. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. If your reservation is made within 120 days of departure, the entire cost of the trip must be paid at the time of the request to secure confirmation.

CANCELLATION CHARGES

Cancellations must be received in writing and will become effective on the date of e-mail receipt. Cancellations received by Emmarosh are subject to the following:

145 days or more – the 30% deposit can be carried over for a future booking from the same clients

144 – 91 days prior to departure (or more): 30% of the program price per person.

90-61 days prior to departure: 50% of program price

60 days prior to departure (or less): 100% of the program price

Changes to the Itinerary:

The guest will be responsible for any changes or cancellations made to the itinerary at their request or beyond their control, before or during travel, including expenses incurred due to a change, delay or cancellation of any flights. If a guest cancels or leaves a journey and a roommate remains, an additional supplement may apply to the price for the remaining guest.

All internal air is 100% non-refundable at time of final payment (some exceptions may apply).

CANCELLATION CHARGES FOR EXTRA SERVICES

Additional hotel nights and other extra services booked in connection with Emmarosh programs are subject to specific cancellation penalties.

Luggage

Please note that total luggage is restricted to 15kgs or 33 lbs. per person in soft sided / duffel type of bags. Hard cased suitcases are not allowed on the shared charter flights. We offer laundry services free of charge outside Antananarivo for this program only.

Weight Limits

Our ground handler requires in advance knowing the weight of each passenger participating on this program for internal charter flights purposes. For guests weighing more than 200 lbs. per person a surcharge may apply because a bigger aircraft would have to be used.
